Can I convert my m.2 SSD to SATA SSD?

--

You can’t directly convert an M.2 SSD to a SATA SSD. They are different interfaces with different capabilities. However, you can clarify the situation depending on what you want to achieve:

  • M.2 SATA SSD to SATA SSD: If your current M.2 SSD uses the SATA interface (not NVMe), then using a M.2 to SATA adapter won’t affect the speed. Both interfaces are SATA III with a theoretical maximum of 6 Gbps (around 600 MB/s in real-world use).
  • M.2 NVMe SSD to SATA SSD: This is where the speed limitation comes in. NVMe M.2 SSDs are significantly faster than SATA SSDs, reaching speeds upwards of 3,500 MB/s. Using an M.2 to SATA adapter would bottleneck the NVMe drive, forcing it to operate at SATA speeds.
